Bracelet plan places cost on inmates

4/17/08 - Gloucester County Times - WOODBURY Criminals considered to be of little threat to the public could be shelling out dollars a day to walk free as part of a county Department of Correctional Services monitoring program.

The board of freeholders awarded a contract Wednesday night to Secure Alert, Inc. to issue global positioning tracking ankle bracelets for non-violent offenders who qualify. see full article

Board gives OK to ankle bracelets

4/15/08 - The Daily Journal - It's law enforcement's highest-flying "eye in the sky," but this bit of satellite-hauled hardware can keep track of criminals "24/7," and at a cost far below the daily price of housing and feeding them in jail.

That's the reason the Iroquois County Board recently gave the green light to requests by the sheriff's police and probation department to establish Secure Alert prisoner tracking system in the county, said Sheriff Eldon Sprau and Probation Supervisor Mike Power. see full article

 

Inmate 'bracelets' a prudent step

3/25/08 -THE CITIZEN OF LACONIA - The cost to operate the county's Corrections Department currently stands at close to $3.2 million. Corrections is no place to cut expenses impetuously. After all, the public's safety is potentially at stake. Taxpayers, strapped though they are, are more than willing to pay for their own peace of mind and that of their neighbors.

Still, steps need to be taken to control spending and this is especially true, when you consider that the county's incarceration space is close to being “maxed out,” prompting serious look at possible expansion of the jail and house of corrections.
